Night Audit

What does the Night Audit do?

The night audit is a daily financial and operational review conducted at the end of a hotel's business day. It ensures that all guest charges, payments, and revenue are accurate before closing the business day and starting the next.

How it applies to hotel operations

The night audit is responsible for balancing the hotel's accounts. It also verifies transactions from the PMS, POS, and other systems, and generates reports such as occupancy, revenue, and room status.

This process marks the official end of the working day in most PMSs. For hotels using computerised PMS or AI tools, the night audit can be run automatically, reducing errors and saving time for night staff.

The main jobs of the night auditor

• Combine the accounts of guests and non-guests.
• Check room rates, taxes, and discounts.
• Post any outstanding transactions not yet recorded.
• Close the business day in the PMS.
• Create reports for managers and accountants.

Important Note:

Even with automation, staff must manually review irregular transactions to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.
